Best TV shows on TV tonight

Paris Police 1905, from 9 pm, BBC Four

Following Paris Police 1900, BBC Four’s French period crime drama is back for a second series, with the cases again based on true crimes. Although it’s called Paris Police 1905, the series opens at Christmas 1904 when a body is found in one of Paris’ usually tranquil public parks, Bois de Boulogne. Returning to head up the investigation, which is based on a real murder known as ‘Le mort du bois’, is ambitious police inspector Antoine Jouin (Jérémie Laheurte).

The character is inspired by real-life Parisian cop Louis-François Jouin, and his investigations take him into an underworld of pimps, blackmailers and crooked doctors in early 20th-century Paris.

Spoofs such as Takeaway’s whodunnit mini-serials have long been a mainstay of Saturday-night entertainment (you can see 2022’s Polter Guys, in which Ant and Dec play ghostbusters, in a feature-length version on ITVX). Tonight, there is a brand-new mystery, Murder at Bigwig Manor. Look out for The Masked Singer’s Joel Dommett and Davina McCall, plus Keith Lemon and Judi Love among others. And this week’s guest announcer is Big Zuu.

Casualty, 8:40 pm, BBC One

Ashok is shaken after mysterious events at the care home.

The elder abuse storyline gains horrifying momentum tonight, with terrified Ashok (Kriss Dosanjh) barricaded in his bloodstained care-home bedroom clutching a knife. Rash teams up with Dylan to uncover the truth – and it’s darker than anyone suspected… Elsewhere, encouraged by Max (Nigel Harman), Jacob cracks the whip so hard that he’s in danger of hurting himself. But is he ringmaster or is he Max’s puppet?

Stevie realises that Marcus isn’t going to go down without a fight – and he fights dirty. But then again, so does Stevie! Meanwhile, Max reveals further details about his time at university with Dylan. Dear Casualty, can we have a flashback episode of that, please?

Starstruck, 8:30pm, ITV1

This series has served up some top talent so far. With Sam Smith and Meat Loaf tributes through to the final, tonight’s performers will need to bring their A-game as they imitate a rock legend, a Motown diva, a Hollywood icon and one of Britain’s best-loved singer-songwriters. Also featuring a special performance from judge Adam Lambert, you really will have stars in your eyes.
