The Diplomat, Netflix

The always-excellent Keri Russell stars as Kate Wyler, the newly appointed US Ambassador to the United Kingdom, who was hoping to be sent to Afghanistan rather than London. But as threats of war bubble over across the world, Kate has to make do with the UK, where she defuses international crises, forges strategic alliances, and adjusts to her new life and career. Making everything harder is Kate’s need to balance the grandeur and majesty of working with heads of state with surviving her long-term marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). The political thriller also stars Brits David Gyasi and Rory Kinnear, while Celia Imrie makes a guest appearance.

Paul O'Grady: For the Love of Dogs series 11, 8.30 pm (times vary, not Scotland), ITV1

Fudge the Doberman puppy

Seeing the late Paul O’Grady cuddle and comfort homeless dogs, joking about their age and fragility with his natural warmth and empathy, gives this show even more of the aww-factor this week. First to arrive is Fudge, a silky chocolate-brown doberman pup full of fun and nip. Our host quickly notices his bent front paws and takes him to the Battersea vet for a diagnosis. Also in this episode, Paul finds himself throwing a party for Terry, a very loveable senior Jack Russell. But the highlight has got to be the arrival of heavily pregnant stray spaniel Daisy, and Paul’s palpable joy as he witnesses her very special delivery.

Reunion Hotel, 8 pm, BBC Two (Wales, BBC One)

There’s a lot that’s familiar about Reunion Hotel and if you’re a fan of Long Lost Family you’ll know what we mean! Nothing wrong with that, though. Tonight, presenter Alex Jones’ candidates are four plucky women who haven’t seen each other since they were part of the first all-female expedition to make it to the North Pole. They have some stories to tell. But so does Noah, who hasn’t seen childhood friend Matt since they were teenagers half a lifetime ago. Actually, an entire lifetime ago, for Noah anyway, who was a girl in those days before he transitioned. And there’s Kwesi, 70, who hasn’t ever met his daughter, Ruth, a particularly tender reunion that should come with a blub warning.

The Real Crown, ITVX

We may think we know all about the inner workings of the Royal Family over the past seven decades, but this fascinating series offers some intriguing new insights, thanks to contributions from those with a ringside view, from Princess Margaret’s lady-in-waiting, Lady Glenconner, to former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey. The opener examines how the Royal Family has often had to choose between love and duty, and how the abdication of the late Queen’s uncle, Edward VIII, cast a long shadow over both her and her son, Charles, while there’s a poignant reflection on Princess Margaret’s search for happiness.

ObsessionNetflix

From the Regency romp Bridgerton to the saucy shenanigans of Sex Education, Netflix is developing a reputation for spicy television, and this four-part erotic thriller might be it's most lustful yet. The Stranger’s Richard Armitage and Happy Valley’s Charlie Murphy star in the intoxicating tale of top surgeon William Farrow, who becomes infatuated with his son’s fiancée, Anna (this adaptation of Josephine Hart’s novel Damage delves further into Anna’s story than the 1992 film starring Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche).

Filled with lies, deceit and plenty of bedroom antics, it’s a compelling look at the destructive power of forbidden desire.
