Best TV shows on TV tonight

The Piano, 9 pm, Channel 4

C4’s search for amateur pianists has moved to Glasgow Central station in this third episode. As usual, judges Lang Lang and Mika are hidden away, ready to hear the performances and choose someone to play at their Royal Festival Hall concert, while host Claudia Winkleman puts the pianists at their ease.

Contenders include Dana, 12, who overcomes her initial nervousness after Claudia takes charge and instructs onlookers to turn away, and Sean, 26, who wows Mika with his ‘brilliant anarchy’. It’s clear that music is an important means of expression for Dana and Sean – as well as a brilliant way of connecting to us. TV to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

This eye-opening documentary series shows how those working in the UK’s hospitals face constant battles, and must make terrifying decisions, as they work against the background of one of the longest waiting lists in NHS history. It follows the doctors and surgeons at Leeds Hospital NHS Trust as they are forced to prioritise patients while providing life-changing surgeries.

We also meet patients Jamie, who is having a pioneering double hand and forearm transplant; Karen, who has a brain tumour; and Jean, who has an aneurysm. Karen and Jean both need urgent brain surgery but there’s only one bed available.

And with the Darksaber now in his possession, many are hoping the helmeted hero will unite and lead the Mandalorians.

His journey makes for an intriguing tale, while also expanding the show’s horizons, and with the showrunners so good at keeping secrets, there are bound to be plenty more surprises en route.

With BBC1’s The Traitors proving an instant hit at the end of last year, it seems there’s a real appetite for shows involving detection and deceit. This quiz – fronted by ex-EastEnders favourite Danny Dyer and comedian and Strictly Come Dancing star Ellie Taylor – does what it says on the tin as it gives four cunning contestants the chance to cheat their way to a potential £50,000 jackpot. The unlikely but effective duo of Danny and Ellie, coupled with some seriously shifty players, makes Cheat compulsive viewing.

Film4 is screening a number of Oscar-winning films in the run-up to this year’s Academy Awards, but few can compete with The Godfather trilogy, showing over the next three nights, which amassed 28 nominations and nine wins. The original film, adapted from Mario Puzo’s novel, starred Marlon Brando as the mafia boss of the title, with the opening scenes of his daughter Connie’s wedding a masterclass in movie exposition. More than 50 years after its release, it still stands up as one of the greatest movies ever made.
