Is this Phil's last Christmas? EastEnders trailer has fans fearing the worst

Phil Mitchell, Eastenders

EastEnders has released a taste of what fans can expect on Christmas Day – and things don't look good for Phil.

EastEnders has released its Christmas trailer ahead of the show's special episode in ten days' time - and it looks like Phil Mitchell is in grave danger.

The trailer, titled 'Is this Phil's last Christmas?' shows the soap favourite looking extremely ill as he suffers from liver failure as a result of alcoholism.

The 30-second clip shows the Walford gang celebrating in the Queen Vic, but then Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) raises a glass "to absent friends".

The trailer also shows Sharon sobbing as Phil says: "This is going to be my last Christmas, we might as well make it one to remember."

Phil Mitchell, played by Steve McFadden, joined the soap in 1990. He has since been through some of the drama's most turbulent and gripping storylines, including drug and alcohol addiction, affairs, involvement in gangs and protection rackets and stints in prison.

Elsewhere on the square this Christmas, Ronnie Mitchell, gearing up for her fatal exit from the show, gives her husband-to-be Jack a kiss - but he's got his eyes on her barefoot sister Roxy, returning home after what looks like a boozy night out.

The end of the clip shows Max Branning, who has just returned from prison, bumping into old flame Stacey Slater and wishing her a merry Christmas. Could romance be back on the cards?

EastEnders will celebrate the culmination of this year's biggest storylines in an hour-long special on Christmas Day, kicking off at 9.30pm on BBC1.
