George IV was known as an extravagant king who cared more about luxury and fancy surroundings than he did anything else.

But, says art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon, he added hugely to the Royal Collection, buying art and furniture that is still treasured today.

It was Prince Albert, though, who built the museums and art galleries of South Kensington in London, believing that everyone should be able to appreciate great art.
