BBC1's beautifully shot new series Sacred Wonders looks at some of the world’s famous landmarks that have been built in the name of religion.

At Angkor Wat, Cambodia, dedicated Buddhist gardeners regularly climb to the top of the 65m towers barefoot.

Angkor Wat in Cambodia is among the religious landmarks featured in BBC1's Sacred Wonders

They do this to remove saplings that threaten the ancient structure -and with no safety equipment.

Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, thousands of worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque mark the end of Ramadan.

It sees them risk collapse through hunger or dehydration along the way.

There’s also a look at the Virgen de la Esperanza in Spain and China’s famous Shaolin Temple, home of Kung Fu.
