Fans of long-running US sitcom The Big Bang Theory will already be familiar with Sheldon Cooper – a hugely intelligent but socially awkward physicist.

But even if you haven’t seen The Big Bang Theory, don’t worry – this prequel is a real joy of a stand-alone comedy about a nine-year-old boy who is struggling to fit in with the world around him.

In this first episode Sheldon, who lives with his parents, twin sister and older brother in a small town in Texas starts high school.

He’s in the same class as his brother, a handsome and cool football player who is convinced that his geeky sibling comes from another planet.

It’s funny and sweet, and will resonate with anyone who didn’t quite conform.
