Events took a supernatural twist...
The Call the Midwife cast got a spook-tacular fright while they shot the Christmas special – they were haunted by a ghost!
The stars headed off to the Outer Hebrides to shoot the festive episode and stayed at the stunning Amhuinnsuidhe Castle on the Isle of Harris, which turns out to have its very own ghost.
Legend has it that the hotel is haunted by Lady Sophie Scott, a former resident of the Castle who died in 1937 and is buried nearby.
Call the Midwife boss Heidi Thomas told the Daily Star: “The hotel was complete with oak panelling, log fires, a ghost and a dinner gong. It resembled the setting of a murder mystery.
“I used to come downstairs each morning wondering whose body was going to be discovered in the drawing room. By the time the gales and the rain kicked in, I started to worry that it might be mine.
“It had, after all, been my idea to drag the cast, crew and entire production team to the furthermost, most-wind-lashed outpost of the British Isles.”
The plot of the Call the Midwife Christmas special sees Mother Mildred (played by Miriam Margoyles) and the gang on a mercy mission to the Outer Hebrides to help out the islanders, who’re suffering from a desperate shortage of midwives.
The BBC has teased that there will be plenty of problems for the midwives, saying: “Exposed to the elements, they operate in bleak conditions with limited access to water and electricity to help their patients, just in time to reconvene in Poplar for Christmas.”
Heidi Thomas previously promised that it will be a “magical” adventure and it’s one of the highlights of the BBC’s Christmas schedule.
The Call the Midwife Christmas special is likely to be shown on Christmas Day. Meanwhile, the well-loved show will return for an eight-part new series, opening in January 1965, early in the new year on BBC1.
