Noel Clarke: The Level scripts were brilliant. I wanted the role straight away! (VIDEO)

Noel Clarke plays a detective in ITV's new crime thriller, but there's no way of telling which side of the law he's on...

Noel Clarke has enjoyed a sparkling film and TV career, appearing in hit shows such as Doctor Who and directing box office hit Adulthood, but he says The Level is one of the most exciting shows he's been involved with.

The ITV crime drama follows a detective, played by a Karla Crome, who is desperately trying to conceal her links to a crime boss, but finds herself pulled into a dark world of double-dealings when he is mysteriously murdered.

Starring opposite Karla, as well as former EastEnders star Lindsey Coulson and Downton Abbey's Rob James-Collier, Noel plays Gunner Martin, a detective assigned to the murder case. Yet as the series unfolds it becomes difficult to tell who's side he's on.

"I read the scripts and I thought they were brilliant," says Noel. "I called my agent straight away and told him that if they wanted me, I would do it!"

Yet Noel also confesses that starring opposite Karla Crome (Misfits), who plays the lead in this six-part series, was a big draw.

"Karla was another one of the reasons I wanted to do it," he explained. "I've been watching her rise up through the ranks and everyone was talking about her. When the job came up and they told me she might be playing the lead I was excited, because she was someone I definitely wanted to work with."

The Level is on Fridays at 9pm on ITV and you can catch-up on the ITV Player.
