TV Times top picks for today

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Tuesday 8th May

The Secret Life of 5 Year Olds, 8pm, C4

This charming series returns for two special episodes. The first is all about right and wrong and whether a group of five-year-olds knows the difference – and how they feel when someone breaks the rules or those rules are unfair. The first game tests how quick they are to cheat when left to their own devices. Some take seconds, while others not only stick to the rules but make sure their young friends do, too. In fact, in all the games set by teachers Kate and Simon, it’s astounding how caring and empathetic the children are. As little Nathaniel says, ‘If you don’t share, God will get angry and Theresa May will get angry.’ Quite! Rating: *****

Back to the Land, 7pm, BBC2

Kate Humble is back for a second series of the show that follows inspiring entrepreneurs who have forged a living from the land. Kicking things off in Cornwall, Kate meets Caro and Tim, who five years ago started free-diving for seaweed to sell to restaurants. Its popularity as a superfood has grown and Kate joins them on a dive for sea spaghetti and later tastes dried red dulse, or ‘vegan bacon’. The couple now have to decide if they can scale up by cultivating seaweed. Kate also meets duck breeders Tanya and Robert, and two friends who’ve turned their passion for flowers into a blossoming career in wedding bouquets. Continues all week. Rating: *****

Top of the Shop with Tom Kerridge, 8pm, BBC2

It’s the concluding week of the competition as the last place in the final is decided tonight. Hoping to be the winner in the baked goods round are Phoebe with her gluten- and dairy-free brownies; Angelika from Lancashire, who makes and sells pretzels; techie Mike, who bakes sourdough for his neighbours; and, hoping to introduce Brits to Japanese bread, London resident Utako. In the grand final all seven category winners battle it out for the title of best up-and-coming artisan. Tune in tomorrow at 8pm to see who will be crowned the winner and look out for their product – coming soon to a supermarket near you… Rating: ****
