Here We Go, 8.30pm, BBC One

TV tonight Alison Steadman and Jim Howick are a scream

Alison Steadman, Jim Howick and Katherine Parkinson star. (Image credit: BBC)

Last seen in a 2020 pilot, the Jessops are back for a full series in which they deal with the trials of family life. It's written and created by After Life’s Tom Basden, who stars with Alison Steadman, Jim Howick and Katherine Parkinson, and the general mayhem begins with a day trip to an adventure park where mini-golf and archery are on the menu. Only it looks like the family is never going to make it there when gran Sue (Alison) reveals she’s on dog-sitting duty for a neighbour. A great cast, brilliant writing and plenty of relatable scenarios make for a very punchy and funny watch.

Not Going Out, 9.30pm, BBC One

TV tonight Not everyone feels the same about the great outdoors.

When Lee (Lee Mack) arranges a family-and-friends camping weekend in the woods, it seems doomed from the off. There’s a thunderstorm, Anna turns out to be scared of nature (especially leaves, and woods tend to have a lot of those) and the food hamper doesn’t have any food in it. Then they find that the heavy rain has flooded the road and they’re stuck there – possibly with a deranged killer at large, after the discovery of a huge blood-spattered knife… As reliably entertaining as ever, with more gags than you can shake a tentpole at.

Shining Girls, Apple TV Plus

TV tonight Elisabeth Moss stars as Kirby.

Following a brutal attack, Kirby (Elisabeth Moss) finds herself navigating an ever-changing reality in this supernatural serial-killer thriller. The suspenseful series opens in 1964 when a young Kirby is approached by sinister-friendly stranger Harper (Jamie Bell). Fast forward to 1992 and Kirby’s the survivor of an assault that took place six years previously. The discovery of a woman’s mutilated body that echoes her own ordeal leads Kirby to team up with Dan (Wagner Moura), an unravelling alcoholic journalist (is there any other kind?). A captivating cat-and-mouser with unexpected time-travelling twists.

Best box set to watch on TV tonight

Idris Elba's Fight School, season 1, BBC iPlayer

TV tonight Idris helps young people get the best start in life.

When Idris Elba was a young man growing up in London, he could easily have fallen into a life of crime, but says boxing helped to keep him on the straight and narrow. Now, the Luther star is setting up a fight school to give eight British youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds the chance to transform their lives in a similar way, while he watches from ringside. It’s an opportunity that most of the recruits are determined to grab with both hands, and it’s clear Idris sees something of his younger self in each of them. All five episodes are now available on BBC iPlayer.

Best film to watch on TV tonight

Man of Steel, 10.45pm, ITV

TV tonight Henry Cavill to the rescue!

Henry Cavill to the rescue! (Image credit: ITV)

Another origin story for Superman, with Henry Cavill about perfect as the being from Krypton whose father sends him to Earth as a baby to avoid an impending apocalypse. We all know what happened next and Man of Steel has no intention of messing with anyone’s memories of the Christopher Reeve Superman of the 1970s. Amy Adams also makes an ideal Lois Lane, though in this version she’s on to Clark Kent’s true identity from the outset. That’s progress for you. Talking of which, the special effects really have the 21st-century wow factor.

Live Sport

  • Snooker: The World Championship, 7pm, BBC Two
  • EFL, Queens Park Rangers vs Sheffield United, 7pm (k-o 7.45pm), Sky Sports Main Event/NOW
