Best TV shows on TV tonight

Beyond Paradise, 8 pm, BBC One

An entire family has gone missing, as a neighbour finds their home with the TV and oven left on and their tea half-eaten. But did they leave of their own accord, or were they abducted? It becomes a real head-scratcher for Humphrey (Kris Marshall) and Esther (Zahra Ahmadi) - and, clearly one of life’s optimists, Esther tries to streamline the investigation by buying Humphrey a proper notepad to use instead of random scraps of paper.

Meanwhile, Martha (Sally Bretton) is surprised to discover that the wine supplier for her cafe is Archie (Jamie Bamber), an old friend – and he has a proposition for her…

Trevor Cooper (This Country) guest stars in this week’s Father Brown as Denny, the owner of a local Kembleford cafe, which becomes the summer base for a biker gang called the Ton-Ups. The arrival of this gang of tearaways causes outrage among the locals, and Father Brown and Mrs Devine are soon called in to help keep the peace. But in time there’s also a murder for them to investigate, when gang leader Billy is killed during a fatal motorbike race and Inspector Sullivan realises there may have been foul play at work.

The highlights episodes of Graham Norton’s shows are a great way of rounding off another series. And this first of two is chock-full of big names – Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Daniel Craig, Ian McKellen, Stormzy and Geena Davis are just a few. But will anyone of them be able to top Kate Hudson’s shocking and hilarious story about the antics of her mother, Goldie Hawn, as Kate gave birth?

Finding Michael, Disney Plus

Finding Michael on Disney Plus

This moving documentary follows reality TV star Spencer Matthews as he travels to Mount Everest, where his 22-year-old brother Michael died in 1999, in a bid to find his body and bring him home. While Spencer anxiously waits for news at base camp, a crack team of mountaineers with drones retrace Michael’s route, but with only a brief weather window, they are working against the clock.

The footage is effectively intercut with clips from Michael’s own expedition, and there are interviews with Bear Grylls, who first met Spencer while giving a talk at his school, other members of the Matthews family, and a climber who survived the tragic 1999 ascent.

Best film on TV tonight

Elvis, 8 pm, Sky Premiere

Austin Butler in Elvis

(Image credit: Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures)

The visually lush style of Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!) is much in evidence in this long-overdue biopic about the king of rock’n’roll. And what a gem Austin Butler is, the actor charged with playing Elvis Presley. The movie, though, isn’t told from Elvis’ perspective, but from that of his manipulative manager Colonel Tom Parker (a memorable Tom Hanks), as he takes a teenager from hicksville to being the planet’s biggest star.

It’s a wild ride, even if the movie eventually calms down to become a standard biopic, with the musical numbers – especially those from the ’68 Comeback Special – delivering plenty of wow factor.
