Social worker Lucy Chambers springs awake at 3.33 am every morning – a time known as the ‘devil’s hour’. In this nail-biting six-part thriller with a supernatural edge, Jessica Raine plays Lucy, a haunted and overburdened mother who has recently separated from her husband. Lucy is also struggling with the demands of caring for her schizophrenic mother and her troubled eight-year-old, Isaac, who she takes to see a child psychiatrist (Meera Syal). Meanwhile, a murder is being investigated by DI Ravi Dhillon (Nikesh Patel) and DS Holness (Alex Ferns), one with bizarre links to Lucy’s visions and connected to a murder-obsessed stranger, Gideon, played by Peter Capaldi. Professor T season 2, 9 pm, ITV/ITV Hub

Can Professor T crack his latest case? (Image credit: ITV)

Where’s Adelaide? No, we’re not looking for an answer along the lines of ‘on the south coast of Australia’, because we are of course talking about Professor Jasper Tempest’s effervescent mother, Adelaide (Frances de la Tour). She has gone into hiding after her disastrous joint-therapy session with her son last week, so the Professor asks Lisa to help him find her. That’s not the only mystery they’re trying to get to the bottom of in tonight’s finale, as Lisa and Paul are tasked with investigating the murder of a man whose body is found in a supermarket car park - and who turns out to be an undercover police officer… ★★★★ SP

Ghosts season 4, 8.30 pm, BBC One, iPlayer (box set)

After another sublimely spooky series, the bickering specters go out with a bang! Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) is sent to buy some fancy chairs to impress the B&B guests but instead comes back with something very different, which unsurprisingly, does not go down well with Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and gives poor Robin (Laurence Rickard) painful reminders of his past. Meanwhile, Julian (Simon Farnaby) is miffed that his pals think he is ‘morally bankrupt’ (even though he is!), so he tries to be as ‘helpful’ as possible. ★★★★ CC

The Graham Norton Show, 10.40 pm, BBC One

On the sofa tonight, Graham’s guests include pop icon Taylor Swift, who’s promoting her new album Midnights. Eddie Redmayne talks about starring in the Netflix thriller The Good Nurse (see Wednesday). U2 frontman Bono talks about writing his memoir Surrender, and presenter and former Lioness Alex Scott joins the party. With music from Lady Blackbird. ★★★ MC

Gangs of London Season 2, Sky TV

In the second season of this hard-hitting crime drama, we pick up the action one year later to find all is not well with undercover cop Eliot Finch (Sope Dirisu), now working as an assassin for "the investors". Back in London, Alex Dumani (The Capture’s Paapa Essiedu) is heading up Dumani Finance, while his sister Shannon (Pippa Bennett-Warner), who grew close to Eliot, is still in jail.

And as we are introduced to a new Algerian gang, it transpires that someone is selling guns without the permission of the people who run the underworld. Waleed Zuaiter joins the cast as the terrifying enforcer Koba. The action scenes are violent but brilliantly choreographed.

Best film on TV tonight

1408, 9 pm, Film4

This neat psychological horror film flew slightly under the radar when it first debuted in 2007, but there’s lots to relish, especially for fans of Stephen King. It’s also one for fans of John Cusack, who plays the writer who makes a living going to supposedly haunted places and proving that they’re not. Until he checks into a hotel in New York and finds himself in room 1408. We can all guess what happens next, but it’s effectively handled and there’s also Samuel L Jackson and Tony Shalhoub on hand to inject extra atmosphere. ★★★ SM
