Surviving in this competition must often feel like walking a tightrope, trying to balance Gordon’s exacting standards with warring teammates who all think they know better. But tonight, the teams actually have to walk a high wire to deliver Gordon and two mountain rescue volunteers a hearty lunch cooked in just 30 minutes in the Lake District. The second challenge is to create a non-alcoholic spirit, turn it into a marvellous mocktail and shoot a promotional video. You’ll need a strong drink to watch, as personalities clash, flavours flop and a few so-called drinks experts are left feeling very flat indeed.

Hugh Laurie has fond childhood memories of reading Agatha Christie’s thrilling novel and it shows in this delightful 1930s-set three-part adaptation that he has lovingly penned and directed. Will Poulter and Lucy Boynton are wonderful as ex-naval officer Bobby Jones and his dauntless friend Lady Frankie Derwent, who try to get to the bottom of the mysterious titular question a dying stranger has posed, and soon uncover a murky tale of murderous secrets. Along with Hugh himself as a shifty shrink, the starry cast also includes Emma Thompson, Jim Broadbent and Paul Whitehouse.

Discover the secrets behind the success of late producer Gerry Anderson, who, from the 1960s onwards, along with his wife Sylvia, created iconic puppetry TV series including Thunderbirds, Joe 90 and Stingray, as well as live-action series UFO and Space: 1999. In this documentary, his younger son, Jamie, strives to get a deeper understanding of his father by charting everything from his childhood to his death from Alzheimer’s. Using previously unheard audio and deepfake technology, the great filmmaker is also able to tell his own story for the first time. Gerry’s back catalogue is also on BritBox.

Best box set to watch on TV tonight

The Split, season 1-3, BBC iPlayer

The brilliantly overwrought Stern-Defoe clan are back for an explosive third and final series, and it was worth the wait! Available in full on the BBC iPlayer, seasons 1 and 2 (six episodes each) are also there if you’ve missed this gem of a drama and want to catch up. Season 3 begins as Hannah (Nicola Walker) and Nathan (Stephen Mangan) are tiptoeing carefully through a ‘good’ divorce, although Hannah isn’t quite ready to say farewell. However, a revelation – at one of the most awkward dinners we’ve ever witnessed! – will ensure friction for the weeks ahead. With secrets and angst also bubbling away for Hannah’s sisters Rose and Nina, the drama’s trademark mix of tears and wry humour is firmly in evidence, but get ready for some epic, life-changing curveballs.

Best film to watch on TV tonight

All Is True, 11.15pm, BBC Two

TV tonight Kenneth Branagh and Judi Dench star.

Recent Oscar-winner Kenneth Branagh directs and stars in this 2018 drama about William Shakespeare’s latter years. It’s written by Ben Elton, who also wrote the ‘Shakespeare sitcom’ Upstart Crow, but the tone of this melancholy film is markedly different. A weary Shakespeare (Branagh) has retired to Stratford-upon-Avon to be with his wife (Judi Dench) and family, but not working gives him plenty of time to brood on the death of his son. Beautifully filmed and low-key, it’s an acting masterclass by Branagh and Dench.

Live Sport

  • UEFA Europa League, Lyon vs West Ham United, 7.15pm (k-o 8pm), BT Sport 1
  • Premier League Darts, 7pm, Sky Sports Main Event/NOW
