Nick Knowles and his army of skilled volunteers are back to take on more gigantic building projects that will change people’s homes… and their lives. In this week’s first episode, Nick and the gang head to Kettering to help midwife Lindsey and her four children after the sudden death of her husband, Shaun, left them with a partially renovated home they couldn’t live in. As some of Shaun’s old Army buddies and local tradespeople pitch in on the job, this uplifting and emotional show reminds us yet again, with all that’s bad in the world, people will always lend a helping hand.

Singer Will Young opens up about the tragic death of his twin brother, Rupert, in this highly personal documentary. Rupert, who was younger than Will by 10 minutes, was aged just 41 when he died after jumping off London’s Westminster Bridge in 2020 following a 20-year battle with alcoholism and depression. Now, Will shares his and his family’s ongoing pain of losing Rupert, whom he also regarded as his best friend. He also meets other people whose lives have been affected by addiction and criticises what he regards as a woeful and shortsighted lack of help and support for those who are alcohol-dependent. An honest and moving watch…

Among tonight’s entries hoping to make a lasting impression are current favourites Ukraine, along with Denmark, Greece and Norway, with arguably the most memorable title of the competition, Subwoolfer’s Give That Wolf a Banana. UK viewers won’t be able to vote tonight, but we can in Thursday’s second heat (8pm).

Best box set to watch on TV tonight

The Pentaverate, season 1, Netflix

TV tonight Mike Myers takes on eight characters.

Austin Powers’ Mike Myers is rarely content with playing just one character, and in this quirky comedy, the chameleon-like star has a whale of a time tackling no less than eight different roles! Among them is veteran Canadian reporter Ken Scarborough, who is investigating a secret society known as The Pentaverate, which has been saving the world from disaster since the Middle Ages, but is suddenly under threat… He also portrays their oldest member, Lord Lordington. Look out, too, for Jennifer Saunders.

Best film to watch on TV today

Respect, Prime Video

TV tonight Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin

Hand-picked to portray her by the Queen of Soul herself, Jennifer Hudson brings a passionate intensity to this handsome, lushly traditional biopic of Aretha Franklin. Solid and well-crafted, it feels at times a tad too safe, opting for Ray-style old-school redemption storytelling and lavish 1960s costumes rather than Rocketman’s playfulness or Judy’s rueful wit. Hudson’s soaring vocals (recorded live) raise goosebumps.
