Now that her coup has been successful, Catherine (Elle Fanning) is getting ready for her Coronation as Empress of Russia. However, she quickly discovers that enacting all of her initiatives for the country might not be quite as straightforward as she had envisioned, when she meets with the nobles of her empire and discovers that many of them still do not respect her at all. Peter (Nicholas Hoult), meanwhile, is under house arrest (or rather, palace arrest), but is taking it all in his stride, convinced that his wife is doomed to failure, and will soon realise she loves him after all. Well, good luck with that…

If you like your crime dramas easy on the eye and as light as a soufflé, My Life Is Murder ticks all the boxes – think Death in Paradise set in stunning Auckland Harbour. Series two begins with Lucy Lawless’s police consultant Alexa Crowe called up to help cop Harry Henare (Rawiri Jobe) solve what appears to be an open-and-shut case, only the crime doesn’t add up. Widowed grandmother Tamara Innes is charged with the shooting of a businessman out on his morning jog.

They have a witness and incriminating evidence, but Tamara has no motive and denies knowing the victim. Alexa calls her out-of-town hacker pal Madison (Ebony Vagulans), and between them, they delve into Tamara’s life and state of mind...

The medical drama returns for a fourth series and medical director Dr Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) and the team are looking forward to a new chapter in their lives. The first episode is titled "More Joy" as the team try to find and hold on to what makes them happiest. For Max, that means acknowledging his feelings for Dr Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman). He must also deal with the arrival of Dr Veronica Fuentes (Michelle Forbes), who sets about turning around the underfunded hospital by cancelling Max’s progressive programmes. It's already been announced that season 5 will be the last, so enjoy this penultimate season as it builds towards its grand finale.

Best box set to watch on TV tonight

Under the Banner of Heaven, Disney Plus

TV tonight What happened to Brenda?

Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Brenda Wright Lafferty, a 24-year-old woman found murdered in her Utah home in 1984, along with her infant daughter, Erica, in this true-crime drama. Devout Mormon detective Jeb Pyre (Andrew Garfield) initially suspects Brenda’s husband Allen (The Serpent’s Billy Howle) of the crime, but suffers a crisis of faith when he learns that a fundamentalist religious sect may have played a part. With a carefully balanced portrayal of belief in many forms, and uniformly excellent performances, this gripping miniseries doesn’t shy away from the big questions about the power of faith.

Best film to watch on TV tonight

Lightyear, Disney Plus

TV tonight Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear is marooned on a hostile planet.

This much-anticipated origin story follows Buzz Lightyear and begins with the premise that we’re watching Toy Story kid Andy’s favourite action movie from 1995. It follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet millions of light years from Earth and along with his crew must find a way back home through space and time. Threatening the mission is the arrival of evil Emperor Zurg and his ruthless army. The voice cast includes Chris Evans as Buzz, Uzo Aduba as his commander and friend Alisha Hawthorne, and perhaps with the best lines of all, Peter Sohn as the comedic robot cat, Sox. A thrilling and entertaining ride to infinity and beyond.
