It's the first day of school for the children of affluent Californian town Monterey. We meet three mums at the school gates – Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) is loud, sarcastic, funny and struggling to cope with her ex’s new wife.
Celeste (Nicole Kidman, yes it's quite a cast!) is quiet and haunted by her troubled marriage, while new girl Jane (Shailene Woodley) is a single mum with a past she's trying to forget.
We also learn that sometime in the future a murder happens at a school fundraiser.
The parents are all pretty hideous – competitive, bitchy and unhappy – but with a cast as good as this, an intriguing whodunit, plus some beautiful houses and scenery, we'll be back for more.
