Writer Mark Gatiss conjures up the spirit of Jules Verne and Edgar Rice Burroughs with this week’s episode, Empress of Mars, when the Doctor, Bill and Nardole head to Mars to find it being colonised by a group of red-coated Victorian soldiers.

But the invaders get an almighty shock when they encounter an army of Ice Warriors who call the red planet home, in a quintessentially British sci-fi adventure.

It's great to see these classic creatures make a return, but there’s a twist when we discover the reptile-like race's answer to an Ice Queen.
