This 21st-century version of the iconic Seventies drama has been just as heartbreaking and inspiring as the original and this week’s finale, with its nods to the past and future of Kunta Kinte’s family, is a fitting send-off.

The action begins with Chicken George returning from England and being reunited with Matilda and his children, with mixed feelings once he learns what has happened to them even as fate is preparing to separate them again…

When the Civil War begins and George is facing danger in the Union army, Tom takes a gamble on a risky scheme devised by Nancy (True Blood’s Anna Paquin), the fiancée of the vicious racist whose father now owns the family.

Can they finally win their freedom?
