Last week's episode was a magnificent display of all that is brilliant about this breathtaking modern version of the Holmes stories. Tonight's instalment may prove rather more divisive, as Steven Moffat can't resist a self-indulgent, heavy story to move the plot on from last week's shocking ending.

Sherlock's back on the drugs, and we see the story through the lens of his confused, substance-addled mind as he takes on his most evil nemesis yet: megalomaniac Culverton Smith (Toby Jones).

With outstanding performances (Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman get better and better…) a couple of huge pay-offs and surprises round every corner, we’ll forgive the slightly trippy, unremittingly dark nature of this 90 minutes…
