The latest chapter of this series looks back at the most eligible bachelor of his time. The Royal House of Windsor was rocked to its foundations in 1936 when Edward VIII put love before duty and gave up the throne for the woman he loved.

Some 40 years later, the Royal Family were anxious that history should not repeat itself when Prince Charles’s search for a wife seemed to be taking a long time (while he was clearly still smitten with former love Camilla Shand, now a married woman).

Lord Mountbatten advised Charles to enjoy a few affairs, then marry a sweet girl with no ‘past’. After Mountbatten was killed by an IRA bomb, Charles was devastated and at his most vulnerable when he met Lady Diana Spencer.

Crisis averted, thought the family. Hindsight's a marvellous thing, isn't it?
