The paths of bitterly estranged brothers Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton converge in a mixed martial arts contest.
Both men bear emotional scars from their childhood relationships with their alcoholic, abusive father (Nick Nolte) and both are rank outsiders when they embark on surprise winning streaks in the $5million winner-takes-all competition.
It's blatantly obvious where the movie is going, but thanks to the manipulative skill of director Gavin O'Connor and Hardy and Edgerton's ferociously committed performances, this full-blooded drama is a knockout.
