Best TV shows on TV tonight

Death in Paradise, 9 pm, BBC One

When we interviewed Chelsea Edge, who plays Neville’s girlfriend, Sophie, recently, she told us episode six of this series was a humdinger - and she wasn’t wrong! On an unusually quiet morning at the police station, Neville receives a letter informing him that a murder will take place that same day - and not long after, the team learn of the death of boat-taxi driver Jake (Compulsion’s Ben Tavassoli).

Jake’s wife Rose (Downton Abbey’s Cara Theobald) and her secret lover Henry (Solomon Israel) emerge as potential suspects, but Neville isn’t convinced either one is the type to broadcast their intention to murder - and his obsession with cracking the case leads to a truly shocking turn of events…

Father Brown, 1:45 pm, BBC One

The news that Princess Margaret (Olivia Benjamin) will be visiting Kembleford to open the new school library has all of the village abuzz – well, apart from Brenda (Ruby-May Martinwood), who was hoping for Elizabeth Taylor. But the royal visit is put in jeopardy when the school’s janitor, Ray Harrison (Gary Lilburn), is murdered, and headmistress Ms Clement (Sarah Smart) is arrested, though Father Brown (Mark Williams) believes the police have apprehended the wrong person.

Look out for guest appearances from Corrie’s Tristan Gemmill and Mr Selfridge’s Kara Tointon, as well as a thrilling high-speed car chase!

Would I Lie To You?, 8 pm, BBC One

David Mitchell, Rob Brydon and Lee Mack

In the absence of some kind of national alert when Bob Mortimer is a guest on this show, consider this your klaxon. ‘He’s back to torment David Mitchell again’ says Rob Brydon and, sure enough, David groans, ‘Oh, mother of God, no,’ when it’s Bob’s turn to tell his tale. Did Bob win a man’s appendix in a bet? And did he have to cancel his appearance on a TV show because his teeth fell out after biting on a KitKat Chunky (‘while thinking about early ELO’)? Poor David. We feel your pain…

The Graham Norton Show, 10.40 pm, BBC One

Graham has the knack of bringing together all his guests for a good time, whatever their showbiz backgrounds, and tonight’s line-up is certainly varied. Actors Salma Hayek and Julianne Moore join Johannes Radebe, who’s ready to party on his Freedom Unleashed tour, while Shania Twain is behind the mic. That does impress us much.

Best box set on TV tonight

Extraordinary, Disney Plus

Disney Plus is home to plenty of superhero stories, but Extraordinary couldn’t be more different from the typical Marvel project if it tried. In this new British comedy, we’re introduced to a version of Earth where everyone develops a superpower at the age of 18. Well, everyone except our 25-year-old protagonist, Jen (Máiréad Tyers). She’s left feeling (literally) powerless and is forced to look for a bit of hope in her everyday life. Extraordinary is fun, fresh and feels very original.

Best film on TV tonight

Your Place or Mine, Netflix

Debbie and Minka

(Image credit: Erin Simkin / Netflix)

Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher team up for the first time in this feel-good film. The pair play former lovers-turned-best friends Debbie and Peter, who are now living on opposite sides of the US. She’s caring for her son Jack (Wesley Kimmel) as a single mother in LA, while he’s living the single life of an aspiring writer in a NYC penthouse. When they swap lives for a week, Peter heads to California to look after Jack, while Debbie enjoys some me-time in the Big Apple, where she falls for book editor Theo (Grey’s Anatomy’s Jesse Williams). But with Peter wondering what might have been, is it too late for the old friends to give romance another shot?
