A gathering of excited astronomers arrives on Saint Marie to observe a rare planetary conjunction, including the esteemed Professor Bertrand Sworder (Christopher Villiers), who’s pretty famous as astronomers go. After the eclipse passes, his fellow stargazers are horrified to find Bertrand at the foot of a cliff, having apparently taken his own life - but when Neville finds evidence suggesting that the professor didn’t intend to die, it becomes clear that someone within his party killed him. So how did they do it without anyone seeing or hearing anything? Meanwhile, tensions arise between Marlon and Darlene following a change in their working relationship. ★★★★ SP

Amanda & Alan's Italian Job, 8.30 pm, BBC One

In an effort to revitalise small towns and villages, dilapidated houses across Italy were put on sale for just €1 – and best friends Amanda Holden and Alan Carr couldn’t resist snapping up a couple as a project. They’ve never attempted a renovation on this scale before, but they’ve got big ideas, a can-do attitude and an enthusiasm for sledgehammers – what more do you need? It may only be the first week of January, but the scene where the duo witness the state of the property’s interior for the first time is surely in the running for the top TV moments of 2023… ★★★★★ SP

Father Brown, 1.45 pm, Channel 5

Kembleford is abuzz over the unveiling of a model village at the start of this tenth series of mysteries starring Mark Williams. However, proving that the good townsfolk simply cannot have nice things, two people connected to the project die in dubious circumstances, leading the curious Cotswolds cleric to deduce that a killer is using the model village to plan their murders. Meanwhile, on the administrative front, Father Brown is looking for a secretary to replace Mrs McCarthy – but will he choose efficient Mrs Burns or eager Mrs Devine? ★★★★ SP

Best box set on TV tonight

The Bear, Disney Plus

Jeremy Allen White as Carmy sitting in the kitchen on The Bear

Get watching one of the best shows of 2022. (Image credit: Hulu)

Even if you haven’t seen this drama, chances are you’ve read about it or had someone tell you how good it is – there was certainly a buzz surrounding the show which some have called the best (and possibly most stressful) on TV. Jeremy Allen White plays young chef Carmy, who applies skills honed working in New York’s hottest spot to running a Chicago sandwich shop after his brother dies and leaves it to him. If you’re not shouting ‘Behind!’ every time you squeeze between the fridge and a bemused family member, you soon will be. A second series has already been commissioned – are we a little excited to see what’s next for the staff at The Original Beef of Chicagoland? Yes, chef! ★★★★★ JP
