Best TV shows on TV tonight

The Walk-In, ITV, 9 pm

The Walk-In on ITV stars Stephen Graham in a true crime story by Jeff Pope.

Jeff Pope has a track record of turning Britain’s most haunting moments into riveting dramas and he delivers another tour de force with this five-part series about a real-life right-wing plot to murder an MP. The story focuses on Matthew Collins (Stephen Graham), a former extremist-turned-anti-racism campaigner, but the heart of this story is Robbie Mullen (Andrew Ellis), a disillusioned loner who finds himself being seduced by the far right. Graham and Ellis, who co-starred in This Is England - another powerful tale of racism and regret - play two men at very different ends of the same painful road.

As the brilliantly twisted crime drama hurtles towards its thrilling conclusion (the final part is tomorrow at 9 pm), it has some more horrifically shocking moments in store. Events continue to spiral chaotically out of control for troubled vicar Harry Watling (David Tennant), still holding his son Ben’s maths tutor hostage, when Ben becomes convinced that his parents are hiding something – or someone – in their cellar. Meanwhile, in America, death row criminologist Jefferson Grieff (Stanley Tucci) gets a date for his execution and journalist Beth (Lydia West) returns to the UK armed with clues. As everyone’s lives finally collide in the most surprising way, things take an appalling and bloody turn...

There are some colourful hair masterpieces worthy of the cover of Vogue in E4’s fun new competition. Presented by AJ Odudu, the eight-part series follows 11 wannabe hairdressers as they compete in a series of tough challenges, all judged by top stylists Lisa Farrall and Sam McKnight (who styled Princess Diana’s hair). But things get off to a disastrous start in the opening round when stylist Darren’s giant heart made out of hair topples over, and AJ is also left comforting a contestant who leaves the studio in tears... Who will make the cut?

Winner of the Best Picture Oscar in 2017, Barry Jenkins’ poetic masterpiece is an epic character study of masculinity, solidly grounded in humanity. Separated into three chapters, this follows the travails of a black man in America: the bullied kid (Alex R Hibbert), the confused teenager (Ashton Sanders) and, finally, the man (Trevante Rhodes, currently to be seen as Mike Tyson in the Disney Plus series, Mike) who must come to terms with who he is. All three actors are superb, completing the whole character as they struggle to gain a foothold in society, while also dealing with their sexuality. An impressive cast also includes an Oscar-winning Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Janelle Monáe.
