The popular presenter of The Repair Shop returns to his home turf of Hackney, east London, to share his memories of growing up there and learn about the area’s colourful history in this fascinating three-part series. It’s fair to say that Hackney, which has been gentrified over recent decades, has changed quite a bit since Jay was last there 34 years ago, so there are some surprises in store, but it’s the history he never knew about that really touches him. From streets that were bombed in World War One to slave owners who lived in the locality and the persecution of Jewish residents, the series offers a compelling and stark insight into social history.

It’s finals week! After cooking their socks off, the final five now face their toughest challenges. First, the amateur cooks must create a dish inspired by a public figure or a piece of art. They need to put their heart and soul into this one plate of food because someone’s going home at the end of this challenge. For the final four, it’s a trip to Ballymaloe Cookery School for a whirlwind education in local Irish produce to prepare a celebratory dinner for founders Darina Allen and Rory O’Connell and guests. Then it’s back to HQ to battle it out for a place in the final three… Tomorrow, the temperature rises as our chefs come face to face with Gordon Ramsay… Continues until Thursday.

Not even a vet as experienced as Peter wins every battle, which is evident as he tries to operate on Shetland pony Indie, who isn’t at all impressed with his stable-side manner. Matt, meanwhile, gets more than he bargained for while helping Tilly the cow give birth, Julian is speechless when he discovers what is causing guinea pig Minnie to feel poorly and there are puppies galore as Jack Russell Lottie gives birth.

The action picks up after the shocking death of fan-favourite Wyatt and his heroin-dealing bride Darlene, who were gunned down by Javi, the volatile nephew of crime boss Omar Navarro. With Wyatt's cousin Ruth (Julia Garner) vowing revenge, who will survive? And will Marty and Wendy ever be able to return to a normal life?

Best film to watch on TV today

The Vanishing, 9pm, Film4

Taking its inspiration from the so-called Flannan Isles mystery – the baffling disappearance of three Scottish lighthouse keepers from an island in the Outer Hebrides in 1900 – this intriguing psychological thriller is unnerving right from the start. Gerard Butler, Peter Mullan and Connor Swindells play the men embarking on a six-week shift tending the remote lighthouse. The gathering suspense is as slow burning as a lighthouse wick.
