TV Times top picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Tuesday 9th October

Great British Bake Off, 8pm, C4

One of our favourite things about this show is that the producers aren’t afraid to mix tradition with new ideas. So while tonight offers the same camaraderie as we’ve come to expect, it’s also the tent’s first ever Vegan Week! This leaves our bakers wondering how to make a pastry without eggs, milk or butter. Sounds like a near-impossible task, but see what they can do with chickpea water! Rating: ****

Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild, 9.15pm, Channel 5

Ben meets a very interesting character this week, in a remote corner of northern Thailand. Julien, 40, originally from Montreal, Canada, became a Buddhist monk 20 years ago and upped sticks. He lives alone, spending hours every day in meditation and following, as much as he can, the 227 rules that monks are meant to live by. Ben is unconvinced by Julien’s lifestyle – ‘I get the happiness this life brings, but at what cost?’ – and worries his host is lonely and left his Western life too young. But as the pair hand out food donations secured by Julien in a village, Ben eventually understands why Julien feels content here. Rating: ****

Love Your Home and Garden, 8pm (times vary), ITV

Gardener extraordinaire Alan Titchmarsh and his team kick off a new series with a hugely ambitious and heart-warming project. Benita lives in Mansfield with her 15-year-old son Josh, who is severely disabled with limited vision, epilepsy and no speech. Benita and Josh have a very special and close relationship, but Josh and his wheelchair can no longer access parts of the house and he hasn’t been able to get out into the garden for over three years. With sledgehammers at the ready, Team Titchmarsh completely transform the house and create a stunning sensory garden for mum and son to enjoy. Rating: ****

More previews tomorrow.
