William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet

William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet: Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes

Couch Potato Pickings

On Film4 tonight at 9pm

Everyone's talking about it (including us lot on Movie Talk), so I'm really looking forward to seeing Baz Luhrmann's new movie Australia over Christmas. In the meantime I'll whet my appetite with this 1996 film from the creative Aussie director.

I was completely blown away when I saw this film for the first time back in the 1990s. Like most people, I studied Romeo and Juliet at school, so it was a joy to acknowledge the innovative interpretations of Shakespeare's text in this movie version. I was gripped throughout - amused, moved, amazed. It's one of my favourite films of all time and to whoever it was that snaffled my video copy all those years ago, a plague on both your houses.

(Note: since you're very unlikely to own two properties in this current climate, I think I can confidently say that there's no danger of my curse coming true).

Do you remember the film's soundtrack? Everyone owned it back in the day. My favourite track was Lovefool by the Cardigans.

Click here for the movie's website. Yes it still exists. I'm surprised. It's missing many of its interactive features but there's so much fun content on it that it doesn't really matter. That the film still has a website over a decade since it was made just proves how widely adored this movie is.
