As the smoke clears, the village reels

Out at the clifftop, Cain is stunned to find the van he left, perilously close to the edge, with Ross tied up in the back, is empty. There is no sign of him - or a body. Where is Ross?

In hospital, unaware of what her dad did and her husband has done, Debbie is diagnosed with concussion. She's going to be OK. But her new marriage to Pete is in a mess and she wants to talk about it. Pete, however, doesn't want a bar of it and just wants to pretend none of it ever happened. Out of earshot, James asks Cain if he knew what was going on between Ross and Debbie, admitting he could kill his son for the mess he's made of Pete's marriage. Erm…

Pollard and co arrive back in the village. Dawn is breaking and they still have no idea what's gone on. As the police inform them there's been a serious incident, Pollard and Doug go to the Woolpack. When Diane tells Pollard Val has died, he pretends to go along with it, thinking his wife has gone ahead with her plan to fake her own death. David's thrown by his dad's strange reaction. But Diane isn't. Realising Pollard thinks Val's death is a sham and part of their plan, it's up to her to make him see Val really has gone.

Later, Pete talks to his dad. Revealing he wants to stay married to Debbie, Pete admits he's done something terrible but stops short of confessing to killing Ross. James just thinks Pete is talking about what's happened and tries to reassure his son.

Having been given a talking to about Val by Diane and David, Pollard is alone at home, trying to take in his wife's actual death. He's stunned when the ghost of Val appears on the sofa next to him, determined to have the last word and give him a few pointers for his future without her! Farewell, Val…
