Later, at the hospital, it turns out Grace’s pal Carmel is being psychologically abused and physically neglected by her controlling mum Steph. As social services are called in, vengeful Steph goes on the warpath… and Connie and Grace are her No 1 target!

Speaking to What’s on TV about the series finale, Casualty star Charles Venn revealed: “You can expect pathos, high-octane energy, action. It’s definitely an emotional roller-coaster. And myself, as a parent, the pain that’s on display in this episode is palpable. You wouldn’t wish that on anyone.”

He added: “Without giving much away, there’s a lot of trauma within this. On a grand scale, something very pertinent happens that affects a number of people and has a resonating affect on everyone in the ED.

“Expect something quite epic.”

The series finale of Casualty screens on Saturday, July 30 on BBC1 at 9.25pm. The long-running medical drama returns in four weeks’ time with a feature-length 30th anniversary special
