Have EastEnders fans worked out Mel Owen's fate?

Last night's EastEnders left fans stunned as a terrifying car chase between Mel Owen and Sharon Mitchell ended in a shocking car crash stunt, but viewers are convinced that Mel is still alive.

Despite Mel's car flipping over in mid air and landing upside down in the middle of the road in tatters, fans are convinced that this isn't the end of Mel and that she will be back to wreak revenge on Sharon once again when EastEnders returns to our screens on Thursday (7.30pm, see our TV guide for full listings).

Lisa Fowler accuses Mel Owen of buying Louise’s affections in EastEnders

Yesterday's drama started when Mel threw a party for Sharon's 50th and Louise's 18th... but while Louise and the rest of Albert Square thought Mel was doing something nice by throwing a bash to celebrate the milestone birthdays, Sharon, Lisa Fowler and Keanu Taylor knew this was all part of Mel's revenge plan.

With Phil on his way back to Walford after Mel called him and revealed Sharon was selling E2o to Ruby Allen, Sharon knew it was only a matter of time before her secret that Keanu is her baby's father was revealed.

In the end Sharon teamed up with Lisa to stop unhinged Mel's plan play out... with Lisa locking her best friend in the club office while Sharon got a head start and raced to the airport to meet Phil before Mel got to him.

But unfortunately for Sharon, Mel was too much of a match for Lisa and soon she wasn't far behind her in the race to get to the airport.

Eventually the pair met on the road and a car chase ensued... one that seemingly ended in tragedy as Mel crashed into a broken down car while she was just seconds away from announcing Sharon's secret to the whole of Walford on the phone.

But despite the fact Mel's car was a mangled mess by the time it skidded to a halt upside-down on the road, fans are convinced that this isn't quite the end for Mel...

Tamzin Outhwaite, who plays unhinged Mel, has already filmed her last scenes and is set to bow out of the show this week.

But are fans right, and last night's crash is just a red herring, paving the way for her real exit on Thursday?

EastEnders airs Monday and Friday at 8pm and Tuesday and Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
