TV Times top picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Wednesday 28th November

Death and Nightingales, 9pm, BBC2

Some slow-moving period dramas have hot romances within them, but lack the intrigue necessary to keep our interest. Luckily, Death and Nightingales kicks in midway through the first episode with the arrival of Liam Ward (Jamie Dornan), an Irish merchant from   County Fermanagh. He’s soon attracted the attentions of farm girl Beth Winters (Ann Skelly), who is desperate to flee her troubling life with stepfather Billy (Matthew Rhys). All the action in this three-parter happens over one day in 1885 as Beth hatches a secret plan to be with Liam. What begins as a story of quiet passion moves on through a series of devastating events… Rating: ****

Vic & Bob’s Big Night Out, 10pm, BBC4

The 25th anniversary of BBC2’s The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer is the reason for this new four-part outing for Vic and Bob – but any excuse to let loose their unique brand of comic mayhem on the viewing public is always welcome. Long-term fans will be pleased to hear that talent competition Novelty Island is back, this week featuring the obnoxious Graham Lister performing with his rescue owl, Beaky. Plus, the pair disrupt a couple’s cosy dinner date with a song and dance routine, before they are interrupted by ‘Tom Cruise’ performing a daring stunt, and Bill Decker demos unique animal impersonations. There really is nothing quite like a big night in with the inimitable Vic and Bob. Rating: ****

Secret Life of the Zoo, 8pm, C4

It’s all about the boys this week at Chester, with tales of how some of the alpha males are coping in their animal packs. Dominant chimp Dylan has ruled his troop for nearly 30 years, but is he about to lose his crown? Franco the bush dog has taken his parental responsibilities a bit too far by mating with two sisters, usually unheard of with alpha males. And wattled crane Wilma has a new partner, Ivan. Can he fill her ex’s shoes? Rating: ****

More previews tomorrow.
