Best TV shows on TV tonight

The Twelve, ITVX (box set)

Sam Neill as Colby SC along with other members of the court in The Twelve

Sam Neill leads an enormous ensemble cast in this 10-part Australian crime drama which takes us inside the sacred confines of the jury room during a high-profile murder trial at the supreme court. Neill plays barrister Brett Colby QC, defending a woman who’s accused of her niece’s murder. But this is no open-and-shut case, and it leads on to 12 new and engaging tales, as we become wrapped up in each juror’s life outside of the courtroom. With so many characters to introduce, the series burns slowly for the opening episodes, while working hard to keep the plates spinning, but there are rich rewards once the story starts rolling. ★★★★ SMA

Marie Antoinette, 9 pm, BBC Two, iPlayer (box set)

In the last episode, Louis (Louis Cunningham) takes France to war with England by supporting the American War of Independence. In the meantime, Marie Antoinette (Emilia Schüle) is allowed to live at Petit Trianon, where she can be free from convention and throw herself into having fun. The handsome Count Axel von Fersen (Martijn Lakemeier) comes back into her life and the pair find themselves falling for each other. Their attraction hasn’t gone unnoticed, particularly by a jealous Louis, and Marie Antoinette must decide whether to risk a dangerous affair.

Prue and Danny's Death Road Trip, 9 pm, Channel 4

Prue Leith and her son, the Tory MP Danny Kruger, debate the hot topic of assisted dying. Ever since her brother died from bone cancer, Prue has been campaigning for assisted dying to be legalised in the UK. But Danny worries vulnerable, disabled or elderly people could be coerced into having an assisted death if the law changes. To find out more, they travel to Canada and Washington State, where assisted dying is legal, to meet people on both sides of the argument.

Cold Case Forensics: The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, 9 pm, ITV1, ITVX (box set)

The final episode in this compelling series looks at one of the most high-profile cold cases in recent years – the brutal murder of teenager Stephen Lawrence in 1993 by a racist gang. While his death had shocked the nation, the fact that his killers remained free was also shocking. Forensic scientist Dr Angela Gallop and her team were brought in after the case was reopened in 2006. Painstaking examination of fibres – thread by thread –  and hairs taking weeks finally gave detectives the breakthrough they needed, as well as justice to Stephen’s family.

The Apprentice, 9 pm, BBC One

Someone will inevitably be eaten for lunch when Lord Sugar sets the remaining candidates the task of designing a lunchbox for six-to-eight-year-olds. And even these boardroom babies know marketing to kids is risky business. But that’s not their fill, as they must link it to an app encouraging healthy eating. What this edition proves is how the best ideas are those that stick to a vision, so while one team impress a panel of industry experts with their crystal-clear aesthetic, the other’s efforts are headed straight for the bin.
