Best TV shows on TV tonight

The Traitors, 9.30 pm, BBC One

Spending three weeks in the Scottish Highlands with Claudia Winkleman sounds like a hoot to us — but it turns out to be surprisingly dangerous! In this new game show, 22 players compete to win up to £120,000 by taking part in a series of physical and mental challenges — but among them are a group of ‘Traitors’, selected by Claudia, who meet secretly each night to ‘murder’ a fellow player and eliminate them from the game.

Can the remaining contestants, the ‘Faithful’, identify and banish the Traitors before becoming their next victim? Stick with this highly addictive series to find out. Continues tomorrow and Thursday.

In the series finale, Louis meets singer, presenter, actor and model Rita to talk about her phenomenal career. He joins Rita in her family home and her father’s pub, where they discuss her family’s refugee experience after they fled war-torn Kosovo for the UK.

She also talks about her tricky relationship with the press and the tough start she had to her music career. Louis also joins Rita in Albania, where she performs a gig, and in LA, where he meets her husband, director Taika Waititi, and hears all about their relationship.

Freddie & Jason: Two Men in a Tent, 9 pm, ITV1

Freddie & Jason

Jason Manford’s face as he scales down a mountainside and later plunges into a chilly lake is a sight to behold, but good on him for giving it a go! In this one-off special, the comedian is at the mercy of cricket legend and outdoor enthusiast Freddie Flintoff, who is taking him on a wild adventure in the depths of stunning North Wales.

Climbing Snowdon, foraging for food and sleeping on the side of a cliff are all on the itinerary for home-comfort-loving Jason. Beautiful scenery is to be expected but there are also touching moments when the two men chat candidly to each other.

Miriam Margolyes and Alan Cumming leave Scotland for California for the final leg of their adventure. In Los Angeles, they go to a spa, not for themselves but for Alan's dog, Lala.

Next, they try their luck in an original 1940s casino in old town Las Vegas and seal their friendship in a ceremony conducted by a Dolly Parton priest! Their journey concludes over a cocktail as they reflect on their travels together.

1899 is the latest series by Dark creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. Their newest offering is an enigmatic show that will have viewers question what is going on at every turn of its eight-episode first season, so it's perfect for those looking for a twisty new thriller to entertain them over the weekend.

All eight episodes are now available to stream on Netflix and feature a great cast including The Pursuit of Love's Emily Beecham and It’s for Your Own Good's Andreas Pietschmann.

Best film on TV tonight

Venus, 11.55 pm, Film4

Venus film

Here’s a chance to remember Leslie Phillips, who died earlier this month, in this left-field 2006 comedy (of sorts), which saw Peter O’Toole score his eighth Oscar nod as an old rogue of an actor who falls for an uncouth 19-year-old. Phillips is the catalyst, a grumpy old thespian who connects up his great-niece (a remarkable Jodie Whittaker) with his old pal (a deliciously fruity O’Toole), little realising that the silly old fool is going to lose his head to her.

It’s a brief but touching performance by Phillips, perfectly in keeping with the film’s warm, funny and wistful, if often foul-mouthed, tone.
