Best TV shows on TV tonight
Shetland, season 7, 9 pm, BBC One
So much for detective Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall) easing himself gently back into his work after a year away from policing. Not only has he got a missing-person case on his hands, but now he has two dead bodies to deal with, one of which still hasn’t been identified. As the latest crime scene is examined, new evidence is discovered which leads Perez and the team to wonder if they’ve been looking at their case all wrong all along. Could Rachel’s missing son Connor Cairns actually be a killer on the run? It’s an absolute gripper of an episode full of twists and ends on a devastating cliffhanger – definitely don’t miss this one…

The Great, season 2, 10 pm, C4
Of all the plot twists we weren’t expecting in this delightful romp through Russian quasi-history, ‘a crocodile being let loose in the palace’ definitely wasn’t among them. While the nobles flee from the ravaging reptile, Archie ventures the opinion that the croc attack is a sign that God doesn’t approve of Catherine’s reign – and when he positions himself as the only person who can fix it, Catherine realises Archie’s the one responsible for releasing it. Meanwhile, buoyed by his recent sexual encounter with his estranged wife, Peter decides to step up his campaign to win Catherine back by playing hard to get…

The Repair Shop, 8 pm, BBC One
Ready for whatever comes through those big barn doors, Jay Blades and his team of crack craftspeople this week embrace the usual mix of the familiar and the exotic. A Victorian carved wood table and a 1970s swivel-ball chair cover those bases, and so do the next two items – a one-armed bandit/fruit machine (delete according to age) and a cute mechanical toy dog so intricate and delicate it requires the combined skills and experience of Steve Fletcher and the Bear Ladies to stand any chance of getting it to work again.

The Accused: National Treasures on Trial, 9 pm, C4
Cliff Richard, Neil Fox and Paul Gambaccini discuss how false sexual accusations in the wake of Operation Yewtree changed their personal lives and careers. It's 10 years since the famous faces were accused and the consequences of the very public investigation still haunt the trio. The illuminating one-off film also features interviews with police officers and journalists who were involved in investigating and reporting on other cases discovered by the Metropolitan Police operation.

Best box set to watch on TV tonight
Marriage, BBC iPlayer
Fans of Stefan Golaszewski (Him & Her, Mum) are in for a treat, as the writer-director debuts his new series. TV heavyweights Sean Bean and Nicola Walker star as couple Ian and Emma, who are far from wedded bliss as they approach their 27th anniversary. Ian is in freefall after being made redundant, while Emma is quietly thrilled by the attentions of her boss, Jamie (an excellently obnoxious Henry Lloyd-Hughes). An intense look at the minutiae of married life, which for singles may feel like a blink-and-you-miss it backwater; for couples, it’s an eye-opening drive through the intricate landscape of long-term relationships. All four episodes are now available on BBC iPlayer.
Best film to watch on TV tonight
Point Break, 10.20 pm, BBC Three
FBI agent Keanu Reeves infiltrates Patrick Swayze’s gang of bank-robbing surfers and is seduced by his new supercharged lifestyle. The story veers from the inane to the insane, but that hardly matters, because the main aim here is simply to keep moving. The long chase sequence and the sky-diving stunts in particular are both breathless and breathtaking and, throughout, director Kathryn Bigelow takes absolutely no prisoners in her pursuit of thrills and spills. The result is a hugely enjoyable buddy movie with a good line in tongue-in-cheek humour.
