Oliver Valentine is put out when his low-key birthday surprise for Zosia is upstaged by her dad, Guy Self. But the warring men are forced to work together when army medic, Bernie Wolfe (Jemma Redgrave), is brought to Holby with heart problems and a neck fracture. She'd been training medics in Afghanistan when the car she was in hit a roadside IED. Already at loggerheads, Guy won't operate on her spine if her heart might rupture, but Ollie won’t operate on her chest if her spinal chord is at risk. As they argue, Bernie tells the pair they must operate at the same time!

As birthday girl Zosia preps Bernie for surgery, her husband Marcus arrives and is thrilled to have his wife back in the UK. Marcus is stunned, though, when Bernie reveals she’s been offered another 10 years in the army, and he tells her she must choose between her career or her family! Later, Zosia feels torn between Ollie and Guy over plans for her birthday dinner and, sensing something's wrong, Bernie advises her do what makes her happy. In the coming weeks, Bernie joins Holby as a general surgeon – but will her heart always be in the army?

Meanwhile, still reeling after the discovery of a family secret, Serena struggles to put her personal life before her professional duties. Can new beau Robbie help her engage with her past?

Also, Dom tries to keep a secret from Ric while dealing with a challenging patient. But will the truth get out?
