Muriel (Toni Collette) is shy, overweight and can't stop listening to Abba records
Muriel (Toni Collette) is shy, overweight and can't stop listening to Abba records.
Shunned by the local Aussie in-crowd, she believes that her life will become as perfect as an Abba song, if only she could get married...
Matching an infectious enthusiasm for life with a savage, rude streak of humour, this Australian comedy hits the bull's-eye.
Some choice Abba tracks (Dancing Queen has never seemed so soulful) give an immense boost to the film's sharp sense of fun and the depiction of Muriel's home town, the memorably named Porpoise Spit ('the jewel of the north coast'), is a hoot.
Collette is superb and she gets excellent support from Bill Hunter as her overbearing dad, Rachel Griffiths as her self-confident new friend and Daniel Lapaine as a sullen candidate for Mr Right.
