The New Gypsy Kings

Nearly 30 years ago, we wereall mad for Bamboléo and the other songs of The Gipsy Kings. Now,this documentary in the This World strand suggests that the focus of Gypsy music has moved to Romania. And what a twin-track story it is. On the one hand we have traditional bands, such as Taraf de Haïdouks, who have toured the world yet live in poverty; on the other, there are the manele singers such as Florin Salam, whose blinged-up, poppier styleis making them millions. But with the money comes a burden – the Romanian mafia. You wouldn't want to tangle with any of these guys.
