TV Times team top picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight three of the best shows on telly tonight for Tuesday 12th December

The A Word, 9.00pm, BBC1

“I feel like I’ve opened the door and all the bad stuff is pouring out and I can’t make it stop,” says Paul as this superb drama draws to a close. But when the troubled dad admits to Alison that he is struggling to see a way forward for their marriage, things are looking bleak… Poor Rebecca is drawn into the mess too as she’s decided not to go to university so she can be around for Joe. Meanwhile, after Maurice tries to hide from Louise, they have a heart-to-heart. After a devastating incident at the school concert, can the extended Hughes clan find any peace? Fingers crossed for a third series. Rating: *****

Food Unwrapped Does Christmas, 8.00pm, C4

Food Unwrapped Does Christmas

Jimmy Doherty, Kate Quilton, Matt Tebbutt, Dr Helen Lawal and the gang are back for a special edition of the show that gets to the bottom of all things edible in preparation for the festive season. They report from places as far-flung as north-west America, Zanzibar, Italy and Belgium to answer questions on non-meat treat Tofurkey, silver ball cake decorations (and whether there’s any real silver in them), sage and onion stuffing, and the ingredient that makes all the difference to mulled wine. Plus, we learn why Christmas puddings are able to last so long and hear from a flavour scientist with a surprising (to say the least!) match for turkey – nuts, mushrooms… and chocolate! Rating: ***

Ben Fogle: Return to the Wild, 9.00pm, C5

Ben Fogle: Return to the Wild

The presenter has given us one of the most consistently absorbing shows around in Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild, where he travels to remote parts of the world to meet people who’ve turned their backs on modern life. In this two-part series, he returns to the scene of the most fascinating characters he’s met to find out how life has changed. Former businessman Dave Glasheen has been living on Restoration Island, off Australia’s north-east coast, for over 20 years. It’s five years since Ben first met Dave, and he’s keen to know how he’s doing – not least because, back then, the island had a diminishing fresh water supply… Rating: *****

More previews tomorrow.
