This first film in what was eventually to become a trilogy of zippy sci-fi adventures is a winning combination of dense plotting, razor sharp comedy and splendid special effects. A 'flux capacitor' is the gadget that allows Michael J Fox to travel back to 1955 where he meets his now teenage parents.

Thomas F Wilson is the villain; and scientist Christopher Lloyd has the special DeLorean car that has years instead of miles on the clock. Full of witty moments and clever in-jokes - most of which will come across even better now that the familiar plot is no longer a distraction.

Director Robert Zemeckis later went on to win several Oscars for the glutinous drama Forrest Gump which hasn’t stood the test of time nearly as well.
