Darren and Nancy book an appointment at the hospital but the news isn't good when the physician tells them Oscar isn't responding to sound at all. Darren can't handle the news that his son is deaf. Darren goes AWOL but when he returns, Nancy is overwhelmed with emotion as he opens up and finally accepts his son. Meanwhile, Myra's fears for the future escalate as she finds out what she thought was a hangover, could be something worse. Later, she is dealt some life-shattering news. Ruby and Esther bump into Holly for the first time and take an instant dislike to the newcomer. Later, Esther sticks up for Ruby, and wonders whether their friendship could finally be on the mend. Also, Carmel decides to take responsibility for the McQueens little visitor and plans to call Social Services. But this prompts a shock confession from John Paul about the tot's parentage...

Patrick McLennan is a London-based journalist and documentary maker who has worked as a writer, sub-editor, digital editor and TV producer in the UK and New Zealand. His CV includes spells as a news producer at the BBC and TVNZ, as well as web editor for Time Inc UK. He has produced TV news and entertainment features on personalities as diverse as Nick Cave, Tom Hardy, Clive James, Jodie Marsh and Kevin Bacon and he co-produced and directed The Ponds, which has screened in UK cinemas, BBC Four and is currently available on Netflix.
An entertainment writer with a diverse taste in TV and film, he lists Seinfeld, The Sopranos, The Chase, The Thick of It and Detectorists among his favourite shows, but steers well clear of most sci-fi.
