Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) was furious to be replaced as heir to the Iron Throne last week and he makes a bold move when he steals a dragon’s egg intended for King Viserys’ late baby son tonight. Princess Rhaenyra takes to the sky on her dragon to win it back, giving us a tantalising glimpse of the fire and fury awaiting us as this saga unfolds, but this week’s chapter is predominantly one of fascinating realpolitik. While the lords of Westeros jockey for position, Ser Otto Hightower realises his daughter Allicent could be the key to controlling the King.

Bear is joined by British actor Florence Pugh, soon to be seen with Harry Styles in the much-anticipated psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling. But she’ll probably find it more useful to channel her Marvel Black Widow character as she sets out on an all-action adventure with Bear in Costa Rica’s volcanic rainforest. Florence is learning skills involved in river-canyoning (or ‘bobbling around’ as she calls it) – which she’ll then need to put into practice the following day if she and Bear are going to reach their extraction point.

As autumn draws closer, the thought of settling down for a hearty Sunday lunch is quite appealing. For chef Tom Kerridge, it’s his favourite meal of the week, and the only day he has time to cook at home with his young son, Acey. So for his new series, Tom provides lots of inspiration, from traditional roast dinners to Mediterranean dishes, and crucially guides us through the timings to take the stress out of food prep. Tonight, he shares his recipes for barbecue chicken, a fresh lentil salad and a delicious peach and strawberry cheesecake.

Season 2 of this clever and twisty surveillance thriller began on Sunday, August 28 on BBC One, but you can catch up with the first six-part series, which initially aired in 2019, on the iPlayer. The lead in both seasons is the brilliant Holliday Grainger who plays Rachel Carey, an ambitious and determined police officer who in this first series thinks she is in control of her investigation about a possibly violent former soldier. But can she really believe everything she sees and is there a bigger and more sinister game at play that is hampering her attempts to get to the truth? Also starring Callum Turner as ex-soldier Shaun Emery and Ben Miles as Commander Danny Hart.

Best film to watch on TV tonight

Monos, 1 am, C4

High in the mountains of an unnamed South American country, a ragged squad of adolescent guerrilla soldiers lark around between performing drills and standing guard over an American doctor. When their situation turns volatile, they move down to the jungle below, where things get even more dangerously out of hand. Colombian-Ecuadorian director Alejandro Landes’ stunningly shot film is truly spellbinding, with an hallucinatory power.
