Best TV shows on TV tonight

Frozen Planet II, 8 pm, BBC One

With temperatures reaching below -80C and fierce winds of up to 200mph, life in Antarctica is undoubtedly a constant challenge. However, in tonight’s Frozen Planet episode, we see how climate change is making survival even tougher for the animals that make it their home. We encounter killer whales forced to hunt ferocious leopard seals and albatrosses choosing same-sex relationships due to the fishing industry wiping out so many female birds. We also witness king penguins running the gauntlet of hungry leopard seals in order to feed their chicks and rare footage of the blue whale.

‘Mmm...’ ‘Fantastico!’ ‘Wow, WOW.’ Those appreciative noises mean that actor, gourmand and all-round genial guy Stanley Tucci is back with a second series of his foodie travelogue, journeying through the Italian regions. He’s starting in Venice, doing breakfast the Venetian way: eating cicchetti (fancy little snacks about a million miles away from a bacon roll) standing up with a glass of wine. And, yes, it’s only 8.30am. Stanley also visits Harry’s Bar, goes duck hunting, learns how to cook cuttlefish risotto and discovers a local wine made from grapes that thrive in the ‘impossible’ conditions of frequent flooding.

Simon Reeve's South America, 9 pm, BBC Two

It’s the people Simon meets in this fascinating installment that make it a must-see episode. He begins on the salt flats of Bolivia, getting to know a traditional salt farmer who works on this extraordinary landscape alongside his whole family. He also meets a conservation hero battling to save the huge Pantanal forest and a warrior farmer, who, despite devastating flooding due to climate change, refuses to give up on his land. In Paraguay, Simon visits a Christian community called the Mennonites who are transforming Paraguay with their large-scale farming, but at what cost to the land and the indigenous people?

Best box set to watch on TV tonight

Dynasty season 5, Netflix

Dynasty season 5 cast

Dynasty season 5 cast. (Image credit: CW channel)

The reboot of the iconic soap opera charting the ups and downs of the Carrington family has returned for its final season. The drama begins where season 4 ended as we discover whether Fallon, who was shot by her evil, husband-stealing assistant Eva, survived the attack. A host of familiar faces return for the final series including Grant Shaw as Blake Carrington, Elizabeth Gillies as Fallon Carrington, Sam Underwood as Adam Carrington, Elaine Hendrix as Alexis Carrington and Daniella Alonso as Cristal Jennings Carrington. Also watch out for a new member of the family as British actress Eliza Bennet joins the show as a regular character called Amanda, a long-lost relative who was born and raised Europe who brings some serious baggage with her!

Best film to watch on TV tonight

Queen & Slim, 10.45 pm, BBC 2 (not NI)

Brit actors Daniel Kaluuya (Slim) and Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen) star in this engaging crime drama released in 2019. They’ve just been on a dull first date when they’re pulled over by a white police officer who is needlessly aggressive with the black couple, and a violent outcome results in Queen and Slim becoming outlaw fugitives. Their road trip in a vintage turquoise Pontiac Catalina sees a love story unfold, but there’s also righteous anger burning through what is a timely film for the Black Lives Matter era.
