The Great British Bake Off, 8 pm, C4
"I’ve never wanted to be in a tent so bad before!" says one of the 12 excited new bakers limbering up to impress judges Dame Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood, but they should be careful what they wish for, as Cake Week proves a baptism of fire for everyone! First, they bake mini sandwich cakes for the deceptively simple Signature. Next, there’s an enticing sponge for the Technical, and then there’s a "home bake" for the Showstopper – as in an actual 3-D replica of their favourite home made out of cake! The contestants are a lovely and lively bunch this year and we’re rooting for every one of them already, but who will be crowned the first Star Baker?

Primetime Emmy Awards, 10 pm, Sky Max/NOW
The latest updates, reviews and unmissable series to watch and more!
Highlights of the Primetime Emmy Awards from Los Angeles, hosted by Saturday Night Live’s Kenan Thompson, with the most nominations going to Succession, The White Lotus and – last year’s big winner – Ted Lasso. There are also nods to Squid Game, Stranger Things and Better Call Saul, while Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh are both in the running in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama category. Meanwhile, Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong vie – as their Succession father-and-son counterparts would – for Outstanding Lead Actor.

Fake or Fortune? 8 pm, BBC One
In the final investigation of the series, Fiona Bruce and art dealer Philip Mould visit St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Port Glasgow. They’re examining an oil painting of Jesus Christ believed to be the work of the Antwerp Mannerists, a group of painters of Renaissance art, active in Antwerp and other Belgian cities in the early 16th century, who remained largely anonymous. With no signature on the painting, Fiona and Philip have their work cut out as they travel to Belgium. Bringing fine art to the masses once more, this has been a picture-perfect 10th series.

The Yorkshire Vet, 8 pm, Channel 5
As this new series continues, the first call of the day for vet Peter Wright is a cow that’s struggling to give birth to twins. Multiple births are fairly uncommon in the bovine world and this one is touch and go as Peter does his best to ensure farmer Will doesn’t lose any of his precious herd. Elsewhere, Shona treats a much-loved horse called Barney that’s lost his zest for life and has a stubbornly swollen eye, while Julian operates on a ferret with an infected paw. Finally, Peter and Matt wrestle with a miniature donkey that’s got too big for his boots and Julian has a go at doggy acupuncture.

The Pyrenees with Michael Portillo, 9 pm, Channel 5
Michael Portillo’s second career as a travelogue presenter began with one episode of Great Railway Journeys in Spain, which included the story of his Spanish father, Luis. He’s come full circle in this current journey, as he’s taking the same path in the Catalan Pyrenees that he thinks Luis would have walked as a political refugee in the Civil War. It’s clearly emotional for Michael, picturing his father leaving Spain in despair, but when he reaches his final destination of Cap de Creus and the Mediterranean, it’s a breathtaking sight. Despite approaching 70 and having an arthritic hip, he declares that each day of his trip has been "spectacular".

Best box set to watch on TV tonight
Cobra Kai, season 5, Netflix
The spin-off from The Karate Kid has been one of Netflix’s most popular shows since it debuted in 2018. In season five, the action picks up after Terry Silver cheated his way to victory in the All Valley Tournament, forcing the Miyagi-Do dojo to close. With Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) now trying to expand his Cobra Kai dojos, can Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and his former enemy Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) stop Silver? This season also sees a sidelined Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) on his own mission in Mexico.

A Hidden Life, 11.15 pm, Film4
As war rages in 1940s Europe, in a remote Alpine village farmer August Diehl puts the idyllic life he leads with his wife Valerie Plachner and children on the line by refusing to take an oath of loyalty to Hitler, his status as a traitor to the Fatherland spreading. Director Terrence Malick delivers a visually lavish, quietly epic drama that, although long and slow, is told with clarity and purpose.
