Best TV shows on TV tonight

Our expert TV journalists have picked the best things on TV tonight...

Beyond Paradise, 8 pm, BBC One

Arriving at the perfect moment to fill that Doc Martin-shaped hole in our lives, this Death in Paradise spin-off follows DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) and his fiancée Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) as they move to her Devon home town for a fresh start. As well as some gripping cases (this week: an attempted murder that may have been committed by the ghost of a witch), there’s a genuinely moving romantic drama here - plus an ingenious alternative to the customary Death in Paradise ‘gather all the suspects in a room’ resolution! With wit, warmth and masses of heart, this deserves to be as big a hit as its predecessor.

Gogglebox, 9 pm, Channel 4

The Goggleboxers make a welcome return this week as they cast an eye over the week’s TV. As usual, the programme is filmed close to transmission and after we’ve gone to press, but we’re hoping to hear their opinion on shows such as ITV1’s The Masked Singer and Starstruck (Saturday), BBC1’s Ukraine’s War Diaries and BBC2’s Inside Our Autistic Minds (Tuesday) and C4’s The Piano (Wednesday). Following their absence in our living rooms, we’re also looking forward to an update on the Goggleboxers themselves. Which thriller series is Jenny keeping notes on? What’s the latest thing Giles has done to annoy Mary? And will the Malones ever eat any of those cakes?

Father Brown, 1:45 pm, BBC One

Bob Barrett (Holby City, Casualty) gets caught up in this week’s mystery when he guest stars as keen clock collector Oswald Hartigan, who has invited guests to his manor for the unveiling of his latest valuable piece, the Nightingale Clock. But when his son, Lord Quentin (Jesse Fox), turns up and is later found murdered and the clock gone, it’s up to Father Brown (Mark Williams) to unmask the killer – and the thief! Brenda (Ruby-May Martinwell) is devastated when Oswald’s footman, Jake (Rowan Polonski), who happens to be her new love interest, finds himself in the frame.

The duo throw a plastering party (not a euphemism) for their local friends this week, then Amanda excitedly heads off to the coastal city of Trapani to look for some modern furnishings. Alan, meanwhile, prefers mooching for objets d’art in antiques shops, before the pair reunite to style their newly designed space.

Babette’s Bar is the place to go in Saint Marie to hear the best calypso music, but it might be best avoided if you’re just after a drink. Tonight’s finale sees co-owner Elijah St John (Joe Dixon) dying after swigging from a glass of spiked rum! It’s clear that multiple people hated Elijah – but how did the killer poison his drink in a busy bar without attracting attention? It’s a mystery that calypso-loving Darlene (Ginny Holder) is excited to delve into – but spare a thought for her poor colleague Marlon (Tahj Miles), who is not thrilled by Darlene’s new ‘sing while you work’ policy…
