Best TV shows on TV tonight

The British Soap Awards 2022: Live, 8pm, ITV

TV tonight Nina (Mollie Gallagher) and Seb (Harry Visinoni).

After a two-year hiatus (sales of fake tan and hairspray must have plummeted), the stars of Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Doctors and Hollyoaks descend on London’s Hackney Empire, hoping the drama they’ve dished up can earn them some silverware. Phillip Schofield is at the helm again, but there are a few changes: acting categories are gender-neutral, while there’s a new award for soapland’s Best Family. Our predictions? We’re expecting Corrie’s hate crime story to be a big winner, while Marlon’s stroke in Emmerdale and Misbah’s historic rape in Hollyoaks could also triumph.

★★★★ AS

Casualty, 9.20pm, BBC One

Robyn (AMANDA HENDERSON) and Marty Kirkby (SHAHEEN JAFARGHOLI) in Casualty

There is more Saturday night drama if Casualty as Rash struggles to do the right thing for Paige, while Robyn steps up to help Marty and Adi with their surrogacy, but will things go to plan? Elsewhere, Iain and Sah attend an environmentalist protest on a busy roundabout when a young activist named Suzy hits her head on the pavement. Rash treats Suzy, who tries to leave as soon as possible to return to the protest, but it isn't long before Suzy's dad, Terry, arrives and chastises her for being so reckless.

★★★★★ ER

Romeo & Duet, 7pm, ITV

TV tonight Host Oti Mabuse.

For many viewers the fact that this is the last episode of the singing/dating show will come as a welcome relief. It's received a very mixed reaction as host Oti Mabuse has done her best to bring the fun as four singers pick a song and perform to hopefully win over a potential date. The happy couple then sing a duet together and sail off into the sunset, or at least that's the theory! Whether you are pleased this show will never darken your TV screens again, or have enjoyed this light-hearted and ever so sweet series, this is your last chance to sing-along and many of you won't be surprised to hear that so far there's no news on season 2…

The delay between the first series of this acerbic yet warm-hearted comedy being shown in the US and the UK was such that it had already won a clutch of awards before being screened here. But it also means that fans haven’t had to wait too long for this second series, which sees veteran comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her chaotic twenty something joke-writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) take to the road. Their relationship has never been better – but there’s a cloud hanging over them….

Best film to watch on TV today

Wayne's World, 4.50pm, GREAT! Movies

TV tonight Mike Myers and Dan Carvey star.

Currently to be seen playing multiple roles in Netflix’s The Pentaverate, Mike Myers honed his craft for comedy characters on the US show Saturday Night Live. It was there that he and Dana Carvey developed a popular sketch about Wayne and Garth, two enthusiastic rock music fans who broadcast a TV show from Wayne’s parents’ basement, which was turned into a hit movie in 1992. Rob Lowe and Tia Carrere co-star, with the main cast reprising their roles in Wayne’s World 2 (6.55pm).
